Gifted & Talented Program
Balgowlah’s Year 7 and 8 Technology Extension Program
The Program began in 2001 and has been running for 4 years. It is an extension program and is presently being offered to students in years 7 and 8. The program is based on a 5-lesson fortnightly cycle
OBJECTIVES
- One of the unique aspects of the program is the development of core skills in all teaching areas using the computer as a learning medium
- Facilitate the development of cross curricula understanding
- Enhance Literacy, Numeracy and core Science skills
- Increased awareness and understanding of technology and its relevant application into student’s curricula areas
Projected Outcomes
At the end of the 2 years students will be able to:
- Develop problem solving skills using robotics programming
- Work in teams in preparation for the annual RoboCup Challenge at the University of NSW
- Create databases, worksheets, brochures, newsletters, catalogs, charts, tables, and flowcharts
- Analyse and interpret information displayed in tables, graphs and flowcharts
- Select appropriate image formats for specific design briefs
- Create several PowerPoint presentations with music, sound and relevant effects. These are linked to their core curricula. The Year 7 students create a CDROM for the coming Year 6 students
- Touch type within a range of 30 - 50 words per minute
- Format MS Word, Excel, Access and Publisher Documents
- Ability to create and publish a Web Site to the Internet. (Year 8)
- Utilise skills learnt in all curricula areas
Students also volunteer to assist with school based projects such as the school magazine and Year 12 presentations for their final assembly.
