Languages Other Than English

LOTE students develop the skills to communicate effectively in languages other than English for a wide range of purposes and audiences. This involves the capability to reflect upon language in use, uses of language and language learning, and develop strategies for effective listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing.

Balgowlah Boys has an expanding and exciting French program

Year 7 – Année Sept

Students speak French right from the first lesson, participating in conversations with classmates. They learn to introduce themselves, talk about where they live and ask others information about themselves. They learn about French culture and French geography. We watch a French film ‘Le Petit Indien’ and discover why Jeanne d’Arc was burned at the stake!

Year 8 – Année Huit

Students build on what they already know to participate in longer and more varied conversations. In Year 8 they learn to talk about what sports and food they like and dislike, to invite someone to play a game and to offer friends a drink. We visit a French café to eat Belgian waffles and drink hot chocolate. Later in the year we watch the popular and very funny French film ‘Les Visiteurs’.

Year 11 – Année Onze

In 2005 French Beginners was introduced to the school for the first time. The senior students develop all four skill areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing, and learn about French culture along the way.
